About IE(I) Kolkata

The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] is a statutory body to promote and advance the engineering and technology, established in 1920 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It is the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers encompassing 15 (fifteen) engineering disciplines with a Corporate membership of over 2 lakhs, and serving the nation for more than 10 decades. The IEI has its headquarters located in Kolkata with national presence through more than hundred Centres and several Overseas Chapters, Foras and Organ.

The Institution was granted Royal Charter On September 9, 1935 by his Majesty the King and Emperor George V, which was a momentous event in the annals of Engineering Industry and education in India. The Royal Charter endowed the Institution with the responsibility to promote the general advancement of engineering amongst members and persons attached to the Institution. IEI has been recognized as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India and besides conducting its own research, provides Grant-in-Aid to UG/PG/ PhD students of Engineering Institutes & Universities.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is a first professional body to represent India in several International Bodies, such as the World Mining Congress (WMC), the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), the Federation International du Beton (fib), and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA). It also has bilateral agreements with a number of professional societies across the globe. IEI holds the International Professional Engineers (Int PE) Register for India under the global International Professional Engineers Alliance (Int PEA). The Institution also award the Professional Engineers (PE) Certification.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is a pioneer body to introduce, starting from 1928, continuing engineering education programme, successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering by the Government of India, the Union Public Service Commission, the State Governments and many Public / Private Sector organizations in the country. The Institution of Engineers (India), with its headquarters in Kolkata, India, is administered by a National Council with the President of IEI as its Head.

Ever since its inception, IEI has been the forerunner in setting up national standards for promoting the country’s industrial base which culminated on the formation of the Indian Standard Institution (ISI), now called as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). IEI, in collaboration with Springer, regularly publishes peer-reviewed international journal in five series, covering fifteen engineering disciplines.

About IE(I) Coimbatore Local Centre

The IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre has been one of the most active centres of The Institution of Engineers (India), dedicated to successfully translating the objectives and ethics of IE(I) into practice. The Centre was founded in 1965 under the Chairmanship of Dr. G. R. Damodaran — an eminent educationist, former Vice-Chancellor of Madras University, philanthropist, and the visionary behind PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. For more than five decades, the IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre (CLC) has made significant contributions to the engineering community and society at large.

Presently, IE(I), CLC has a strength of 3,136 corporate members, 6,198 student members, and 20 institutional members. It regularly conducts technical and special lectures covering engineering, management, industrial trends, and topics of current relevance. Industrial visits are also arranged to foster strong technical interaction between members and industries. The Centre also observes important international and national events such as World Water Day, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, World Environment Day, Engineers Day, and other IE(I) statutory days through expert talks and theme-based programs.

One Day Seminars / Workshops and All India Seminars / Workshops funded by the IE(I) Headquarters, Kolkata, are organized through the Local Centre under various engineering divisions in collaboration with multiple institutions. The Centre has also hosted a number of National Conventions of IE(I).

The Centre regularly submits audited annual accounts, quarterly reports, and annual reports to the IE(I) Headquarters on time. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) and monthly committee meetings are conducted in a well-organized manner. The Local Centre also serves as an important examination centre in the region, conducting AMIE Section A & B examinations during the summer and winter sessions.

The Centre has several active student chapters functioning under different engineering divisions across various institutions in and around Coimbatore. Every year, outstanding engineers and young achievers are recognized and honored by the Coimbatore Local Centre. Student scholarships are also distributed through various endowment contributions. The Centre maintains a library with around 1,900 textbooks and reference materials for the benefit of its members. Guidance classes are conducted to support associate and student members.

The Golden Jubilee of the Coimbatore Local Centre was celebrated during 2015–2016, marked by the inauguration of the Centre’s own building, “PSG – GRD Bhavan.”

Rotary eClub of Coimbatore Changemakers honored The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre with the “Changemaker of Coimbatore Award” for the year 2022–2023.

Recently, The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre has been adjudged the “Best Local Centre” for its all-round performance during the year 2024–2025. The Centre had earlier received this prestigious recognition for the years 2019–2020, 2022–2023, and 2023–2024.
